They say life begins at 40, right? This milestone often brings a shift in perspective where we worry less about pleasing others and keeping up with the Joneses. Fashion sense aside—though it doesn’t apply to all—another significant change for many is how we spend our weekends. Pre-booking a taxi for a night out, so you know exactly when you're heading home, sounds familiar, doesn't it? Or maybe you’re the type who, by 10 PM, is already dreaming of sitting on the sofa watching Match of the Day.

Beyond these personal changes, let’s focus on the working life as we age. As I write this, I’m approaching my 45th birthday next month. Reflecting back a few years, I remember those early mornings—up at 6 AM, on the road by 7 AM. That daily one-hour commute often stretched longer thanks to traffic, putting me in a fabulous mood upon arrival at the office. The traditional 9-5 workday, clearly, no longer exists and that business model has sailed.
Just this week, I heard discussions about trials for a four-day workweek. How will that pan out? I'm uncertain, especially for specific industries. For years, my lengthy daily commute left me working late into the night, catching up on tasks I couldn’t complete during the day. Come Sunday evening around 7 PM, the dread of another 80-100 hour workweek loomed large.
Turning 40 is often seen as a milestone, a time for reflection and reassessment. For many, it's a period when the routines of life become starkly clear, and the yearning for change starts to grow. This was my experience, and I want to share my journey with you—how I decided to break free from the traditional working life and embark on a path of entrepreneurship.
The Catalyst for Change
Reaching my 40s brought a new perspective on life. The daily grind of commuting, office politics, and the rigidity of a 9-to-5 job began to wear me down. Every morning, as I navigated through traffic or squeezed into crowded public transport, I couldn't shake the feeling that there had to be more to life. The repetitive pattern of my days felt like a never-ending loop, and the idea of spending another decade in the same routine became unbearable.
Realizing My Worth
One pivotal moment came during a performance review. Despite my hard work and dedication, the recognition and rewards seemed disproportionate. Once I decided to take the leap, planning became crucial. I started by researching the market and identifying gaps where my skills could make a difference. Networking with like-minded individuals and seeking mentorship from successful entrepreneurs provided valuable insights and guidance.
Creating a business plan was the next step. This involved outlining my goals, strategies, and financial projections. I also had to consider the practical aspects of starting a business, such as registering a company, understanding legal requirements, and setting up accounting systems.

Transitioning from employee to entrepreneur involved a steep learning curve. There were new skills to master, from marketing and sales to financial management and customer service. I embraced these challenges as opportunities for growth. Online courses, workshops, and books became my tools for self-education. The initial phase was daunting, but each small victory fueled my determination.

Starting a business is rarely a smooth journey. There were moments of doubt and setbacks that tested my resolve. However, each challenge taught me resilience and adaptability. Building a support network of friends, family, and fellow entrepreneurs was crucial in navigating these tough times. Their encouragement and advice kept me motivated.
The Rewards of Entrepreneurship
Now, as I look back, the decision to start my own business has been incredibly rewarding. The flexibility to set my schedule, the ability to work on projects that truly excite me, and the direct correlation between my efforts and success have transformed my life. The daily commute is a thing of the past, replaced by a dynamic and fulfilling work routine.
So, what did I decide to do? Take action, of course, and steer my life in a new direction. Otherwise, I’d keep asking myself: Is this it? Is this the rest of my life? Is climbing the corporate ladder worth a mere 2% pay rise? What about spending quality time with loved ones and family—the truly important stuff in life? Did I really want to work just to afford 2 or 3 weeks abroad each year? Simply put, no!
A change was necessary, and it’s never too late to start a new career at 40 and beyond. Remember the Bond movie, "Never Say Never Again"? If you still haven’t found that passion that makes you jump out of bed feeling alive, stop and think: "How Can I Change My Life?" The right mindset and the enthusiasm you had when you were younger are still within you. So, let’s explore the actions we can take.
